Encyclopaedia Britannica Launches Multi-Platform CD-ROM
Single-disk version offers the entire 32-volume

CHICAGO, IL, April 3, 1998Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc., has announced
plans to release the stand-alone version of Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition, containing the most in-depth encyclopedic information available on a single CD-ROM, for $75.00. Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition is a hybrid edition (Mac/Windows compatible) of the award-winning CD-ROM encyclopedia, with updated information for 1998.
Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition includes the entire text of the 32-volume
Encyclopaedia Britannica containing 72,000 articles (including thousands of articles which do not appear in the print set), 4,000 images, more than 1,200 maps, the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 1994-1997 Britannica Books-of-the-Year, as well as the complete Index. In addition, Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition will offer users the enhanced Spectrum and Compass features found on the Britannica CD 98 Multimedia release. Spectrum is Encyclop¾dia Britannica's unique outline of human knowledge visually defined in 12 classifications. Compass highlights Britannica's extensive statistical and geographic information about more than 190 nations of the world and features
maps and flags of each.
Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition continues to make information seeking
simple and rewarding with three advanced search features: natural language,
key word, and Boolean searching. According to Jim Gurke, Britannica's

System Requirements
Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition is available for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Windows requirements include: an IBM Compatible 386-based PC or higher (486 recommended); 8Mb RAM (16Mb recommended), 16Mb of free hard drive space; MS-DOS 5.0 or higher; MS Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups v 3.11; CD-ROM drive (2x or faster); and a mouse. 640X480 resolution and 256 colors recommended.
Macintosh requirements include: Macintosh with a 68040 (or greater) processor or Power Macintosh; 8Mb RAM; 20 Mb of free hard drive space plus 32 MB virtual memory; System 7.5 or higher recommended; 2x CD-ROM drive; and a mouse.
The Networked version can be implemented on the following networks:
Novell 3.1x, Novell 4.1x, Windows NT Server 3.51, Windows NT Server 4.0,
Windows NT Workstation 3.51, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups or Macintosh Apple Talk. The network must either have access to a CD-ROM drive to run the program from the CD-ROM, and/or have access to a large hard drive with about 650 Mb or free space where all of the files will be installed.
Pricing for Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition in the stand-alone format
is $75.00. Pricing for the networked version starts at $295.00 for 1-2
workstations or $495.00 for 500 users or less.
