THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ZELL LURIE INSTITUTE FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES TO PRESENT SYMPOSIUM LINKING BIOTECH WITH ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Symposium Expected to Bring Together Over 400 Students and Industry Leaders

ANN ARBOR, Mich., 02/08/2002 -- The Samuel Zell and Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, the world's leading university-based center for entrepreneurial studies, will present Life Sciences: An Industry in Transition along with the U-M Life Sciences Institute, U-M Tech Transfer Office and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. This half-day public symposium will focus on the importance of small companies in Michigan's life sciences industry and will offer attendees a rare opportunity to network among top researchers, analysts and business executives in Biotech.

"The Life Sciences is a field ripe for entrepreneurship, poised for huge societal and economic potential," said Tom Kinnear, Executive Director of the Zell Lurie Institute. "We created the symposium to give students the opportunity to network among researchers and academicians from other disciplines within the University and to learn about emerging technologies from small, emerging and established companies within this thriving industry."

The Symposium will feature two industry leading keynote speakers: Erling Refsum of Nomura International, who will discuss "Big Pharma and the New Biotech," and Alison Taunton-Rigby of Forester Biotech, who will talk about "Companies in Transition." Three panel discussions are also included in this event: "Business Reality: Lessons Learned in Biopartnering;" "Spawning Michigan Biotech Start-ups: Linking Academia, Industry and State;" and "The Partnering Perspective from Michigan Biotech Start-Up Companies."

"We're seeing big pharmaceutical companies outsourcing discovery and early stage development to start-up Biotech firms," said Karen Studer-Rabeler, Business Development Specialist for UM Tech Transfer. "This year's symposium will provide participants with unique insights on partnering with 'Big Pharma', as well as business strategies currently driving research and development programs."

The Symposium will be held at the Michigan League, Ann Arbor, Friday, February 8, 2002 from 7:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Registration is free. For further information please visit: www.zli.bus.umich.edu/news_events/
