UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ZELL LURIE INSTITUTE FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES PRESENTS ENTREPALOOZA 2003: ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN ALL ITS FORMS

Entrepreneurs Richard Snyder and Samuel Zell to Speak at Symposium

ANN ARBOR, Mich., 09/22/2003 -- The Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, the world's leading university-based center for entrepreneurial studies, and the student-led Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club will host its annual symposium, "Entrepalooza 2003: Entrepreneurship in All Its Forms," on September 26. Samuel Zell, AB '63, JD '66, chairman of Equity Group Investments, and Rick Snyder, MBA '79, founder and CEO of Ardesta LLC, will be keynote speakers at this year's Entrepalooza.

Dean Robert J. Dolan will present the Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Snyder at 8:15 a.m. in Hale Auditorium, Assembly Hall. The award recognizes the accomplishments of alumni who start and build successful enterprises. Following the presentation, Sam Zell will give the morning keynote. Zell, a takeover specialist who has amassed a billion dollar real estate fortune purchasing and then turning distressed companies into profit, will talk about the philosophy of entrepreneurship as he lives it.

"Entrepalooza has become an annual tradition for the Zell Lurie Institute as we continue to bring entrepreneurs together to grow and learn from seasoned industry experts," said Thomas Kinnear, executive director of the Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. "At Zell Lurie we understand the value in reaching out to our surrounding community to offer our students the resources they need to start and grow thriving businesses."

Snyder, who will give the noon keynote address, will talk about how Ardesta, a Michigan-based firm with $100 million under management, is taking small tech companies into the commercial marketplace quickly and efficiently.

Located in Ann Arbor, Ardesta invests in startups and early-stage companies, provides business and technical resources to support these companies, and develops industry-building resources such as publications and Web sites. Snyder founded Avalon Investments Inc., a venture capital company targeted at investments in technology-oriented ventures, in 1997. From 1991 to 1997, he served as executive vice president and then president of Gateway Inc., where he oversaw all aspects of company operations.

The symposium will be held in Assembly Hall at the University of Michigan Business School from 7:30 a.m. â€" 1:00 p.m. This event is open to the public. Panel discussions scheduled to begin at 9:20 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. will focus on corporate entrepreneurship, social enterprise, venture capital and southeast Michigan technology ventures.
