PRINCETON, N.J., 03/01/2006 -- ETS announced today that the Hawaii Department of Education has designated ETS as an approved vendor for quarterly assessments of students' progress in Hawaii schools. The state requires all schools to administer quarterly formative assessments for reading and math in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10, starting in school year 2006-2007.
ETS has been working in Hawaii since 2005, assisting schools with School Improvement Team (SIT I, SIT II) and Restructuring services. As part of that work, ETS has helped develop and administer more than 40 assessments in the state, and will administer another 15 by the end of the school year.
"ETS is already working to improve student learning in 15 schools in Maui, Oahu, Moloka'i and Kaua'i, and we are proud to have the Department of Education's seal of approval to develop quarterly assessments," says Gregg Driben, ETS's Associate Vice President of Elementary and Secondary Education. "We look forward to building upon our commitment to Hawaii schools and partnering with administrators and teachers to achieve measurable results for Hawaii's students."
At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, ETS launched its Formative Assessment Item Bank with 18,000 Language Arts and math items written for or aligned to Hawaii Content and Performance Standards. The Item Bank comes with the easy-to-use Test Builder, which is a component of ETS's Instructional Data Management System (IDMS) application.
Educators can use the IDMS application to create customized interim assessments aligned with a district's instructional sequence. A district can also contract with ETS for a Formative Assessment Implementation Package that includes the IDMS application and on-site professional development services on how to interpret and use test data to drive instruction.
ETS is also offering free webinars to Hawaii educators throughout March. Topics include "What Makes a Good Test Item" and "How to Create a Formative Assessment."
