PRINCETON, N.J., 05/15/2006 -- ETS announced today that Algebra 1 End-of-Course Assessments are now available online through the company's Instructional Data Management System (IDMS) application.
"Algebra 1 is a gateway course and a foundation for advanced study," says Gregg Driben, Associate Vice President, ETS Elementary & Secondary Education. "In response to requests from mathematics educators, ETS can now offer its Algebra End-of-Course Assessments through the IDMS platform, allowing for the option of online delivery and immediate scoring."
The Algebra End-of-Course Assessment is based on the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It measures what students have learned in their algebra studies and how they apply algebraic thinking to real-world problems. Schools use the assessment to confirm students' algebra achievement, help teachers identify areas on which to focus instruction, and determine how well students apply what they have learned to problems that require algebraic thinking.
The IDMS application is a powerful Internet-based system that helps educators manage and use assessment data to drive instructional practice and improve student achievement.
Delivery of the algebra assessment through this system offers the following benefits:
--The test can be delivered online or printed for paper-and-pencil administration.
--The test can be administered whenever a student completes an Algebra I course; there are no set testing windows.
--The answer sheets are electronically scored to provide immediate results.
--The detailed score reports provide results by item for district, school, classroom and student.
ETS also offers two professional development programs to help algebra teachers improve their practices and more effectively use the data they obtain from the end-of-course assessment. The Algebra Evidence-Centered Teaching and Assessment Workshop is a multi-day training session in the principles of formative assessment and how assessment can be linked to algebra instruction. The Algebra Teacher Assistance Package shows teachers how to use constructed response tasks to identify common student errors and provides instructional strategies.
